Initial Evaluation, Medication Management, and Psychotherapy

Initial Visit – Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

  • 75 minutes
  • Meet and ascertain your treatment needs.
  • Attain understanding of previous and ongoing difficulties, previous treatment experiences, social and life circumstances, goals for continued treatment.
  • A comprehensive personal, family medical, and psychiatric history.
  • Discuss diagnosis
  • Review different treatment options.
  • Outline a mutually agreed-upon comprehensive, personalized treatment plan which may include psychotherapy and/or medications.
  • Appropriate laboratory tests may be ordered.
  • Obtain additional information from previous providers, family members, etc. ONLY with your signed consent.

Psychotherapy Treatment

  • 50 minutes
  • Once-weekly appointments or more frequently if indicated.
  • Dr. Alfers uses a combination of interpersonal psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and schema therapy.
  • Medications are used and managed as necessary.

Medication Management Treatment

  • 25 minutes
  • Adjust medications, monitor side effects and necessary monitoring labs.
  • Usually monthly, but frequency varies depending on the need.  Appointments are less frequent as symptoms improve.
  • Available to patients concurrently involved in psychotherapy with a non-psychiatrist clinician.

Consultations and Second Opinions

  • 75 minutes
  • Meet and ascertain your treatment needs.
  • Attain understanding of previous and ongoing difficulties, previous treatment experiences, social and life circumstances, goals for continued treatment.
  • A comprehensive personal, family medical and psychiatric history, mental status, and partial physical exams are done.
  • Discuss diagnosis
  • Outline specific treatment recommendations based on your evaluation which may include psychotherapy and/or medications.
  • Appropriate laboratory tests may be ordered.
  • Obtain additional information from previous providers, family members, etc. ONLY with your signed consent.
  • A consultation report is written and made available to your referring physician ONLY with your signed consent.
